The History of the Gold Star Family unit Designation

The phrase "Gold Star Family," dates back to World War I, when military families displayed service flags featuring a blue star for every immediate family unit member serving in the Armed Forces. The star's color would be changed to gilded if the family unit lost a loved 1 in the state of war, hence the term, "Gold Star Family."

As the U.S. became involved in other global conflicts, peculiarly WWII, new organizations and ways to award Gold Star Family members appeared as the number of grieving war machine families rose.

In 1945, the Golden Star Wives of America arrangement was created and in 1947, the Department of Defence (DoD) created the Gilded Star Lapel Pivot.

The pivot, which features a star on a purple circular groundwork, tin only be worn by the immediate family of service members killed in combat.
